Yesterday I was invited to Toyota Speedway at Irwindale for a day at the track. I was set to ride shotgun with Formula Drift Pro Racer, Chris Forsberg. A truly talented and amazing driver. Contractually being paid to be a lunatic must be nice.
I was given an address to an office location in Downtown LA where the group "shuttle" was awaiting departure. Space shuttle seems more accurate.
Victor of The ID Agency was our host and Blair was our tour guide.
This was our base camp. The NOS/Forsberg mobile unit.
Also on deck was Jacob of MMI and Chris of Alpinestars.
We got a tour of the trailer and then set foot on to the track to meet up with the rest of the crew.
As we got closer to the staging area the decibel level was getting out of hand. The air was getting thicker with vaporized rubber and the heavy scent of spent fuel was filling my lungs. It was perfect. We made it over to the rest of the team and fell upon this. A fully outfitted Nissan 350Z. 1000% beast.
Mr. Forsberg. He pilots this land rocket.
So after Chris's solo warm up lap I'm the first lab rat to strap in.
I had my vid camera with me. The footage is basically useless because during the whole ride it's violently aiming at the the dash. Accurate handheld steadycam in a car moving that fast is not happening.
After a lil burnout we were next on deck.
The amount of G forces on your body is unreal. That and the very speed of the car is amazing. Pair that with the car going sideways is basically a large amount of "that's not normal" going on. When we came to a stop the cabin instantly turns into a Cheech and Chong deal. And as a sidenote, my flipcam returned entirely upside down within my hand.
We got back to base where Chris goes over finer nuances of going nuts.
My ole friend Jarod was also there going over rules and judging. He's the official announcer of the entire circuit for 7 years now. He knows drifting, that or pretends exceptionally well. He's the best.
The day came to an end and I went into the trailer to grab my gear. I found this hung over the door leading outside. Hand painted courage art gets me every time.
I'd like to thank the whole event staff and pit crew for welcoming me. I had a great time and loved every moment of it. I was fully educated on the sport and now realize why it's the largest growing motor sport in A'murricka!
The Finals are tomorrow. If you're in the greater LA area you must see these races.
